Between 2020 and 2021, a bird inventory was conducted in the municipality of San Felipe Orizatlán, Hidalgo. A total of 213 bird species were recorded through visual and auditory observations, captures, collections and photographic records. We found 136 resident species, 41 species catalogued as winter visitors, 17 species considered as winter passage visitors, 10 migratory species, nine species are summer visitors and 12 bird species have populations with more than one seasonality category. In the case of 15 species in some category of endemism for Mexico, including four species exclusive to the country. In addition, 28 species were identified in risk categories according to the Mexican Official Standard, three of which are considered in danger of extinction. The analysis of species by vegetation type showed that the greatest richness was found in the secondary vegetation of the medium subperennial rainforest with 126 species, followed by the preserved medium subperennial rainforest with 86 species, riparian vegetation with 83 species, urban areas with 69 species and tropical oak forests with 60 species. In conclusion, the municipality of San Felipe Orizatlán has a high richness of both resident and migratory species that should be protected, especially the sites with relatively conserved vegetation cover that can serve as habitat for species that are in some category of risk

The wetland Laguna de Matusagarati, in the province of Darien, eastern Panama region, possesses an approximate extension of 56, 000 hectares, the largest wetland in Panama and one of the biggest of Central America. Despite 70% of this wetland is on protected areas by Ministerio de Ambiente Panama, there are areas where the anthropogenic impact is notable, livestock, rice and oil palm crops, logging and deforestation are the most intense activities that have led to habitat loss. As part of a comprehensive One Health initiative focused on the surveillance of emerging diseases in the Darien region, we have undertaken simultaneous investigation on the biodiversity (mosquitos, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians) of Matusagarati. Here we report the results of the avifauna diversity undertaken in October 2018 and June 2019. We used mist nests, direct observation with binoculars and photographic cameras to report the species. A total of 169 species were reported, 49 families and 19 orders that represent 17% of the birds from Panama. Here we present the first checklist of birds from the Humedal Laguna de Matusagarati, with this we expect to improve the knowledge of the biodiversity of this wetland and provide data to authorities to improve the policies of conservation in this unique ecosystem.

People’s interests and needs, as well as biological characteristics of species, determine human perception and interaction with biodiversity. Thus, both cultural and biological factors should be considered to understand biocultural salient species. We studied the cultural and biological traits that influence bird salience for an indigenous community in Mexico. Firstly, we used bird lists mentioned by local people to compute salient indexes for species. Then, we constructed seven cultural association categories to represent the local significance of birds (recreation, beliefs, environment, food, crop damage, economy, pets) and compiled biological information about species (color, size, vocal activity, detectability, abundance, daily activity pattern, habitat, residence status, taxonomic family). Finally, we determined the relations of cultural associations and biological traits with bird salience using hierarchical clusters. We observed a strong link between salient birds and human feeding, as these animals were locally recognized as food and threat to crops. Salient and non-salient birds were differentiated by their residence status and vocal activity, as local awareness was greater towards year-round resident and vocal species. Salience related the most with abundance, followed by color and detectability. Our study provides a route to identify cultural and biological factors influencing biocultural salience, which might prove useful for establishing conservation initiatives, public policies, and environmental education actions.
