Six-year incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery: Swedish national study

Abstract: The incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in Sweden is declining, which appears to be explained by a fall in the frequency of major risk factors. Operating earlier in the cataract course, avoiding capsule breakage, and giving intracameral antibiotics universally should further reduce the endophthalmitis rate.

“…Previous research on the intracellular mechanism has shown that PDGF-α can activate the PI3K/Akt and ROS-ERK1/2 signaling pathways (Ursea et al, 2011;Groessl et al, 2013;Zeppieri et al, 2013). Friling et al (2013) showed that activation of Akt and ERK1/2 has significant correlation with cell proliferation, and we observed a similar effect. Therefore, columnar epithelial cells in le-sions of the lens were stimulated by relatively high concentrations of PDGF-α, while PDGFR expression was higher.…”

“…Preventive measures can also be taken after surgery to minimize the risk of postoperative infections (Friling et al, 2013). Patients and their families should be educated after surgery on how to protect operative eyes and prevent wound infection.…”
