Uvaol, a 6-6-6-6-6 pentacyclic dihydroxy ursane-type triterpenoid, is isolable from different parts of plants Plumeria rubra, Olea europaea, Nerium oleander, Lavandula pedunculta, and Malus domestica. It is also obtained by a one-step reduction of naturally occurring triterpenoid ursolic acid. Herein, we report the first self-assembly properties of uvaol in different neat organic liquids and aqueous organic binary liquid mixtures. Spontaneous self-assembly of uvaol in different neat liquids and binary liquid mixtures yielded garland, flower, and petal-like porous superstructures of nano- to micrometer dimensions. Utilization of self-assemblies has been demonstrated in generation of anticancer drug conjugates and the removal of carcinogenic and toxic chemicals.

Erythrodiol, a typical pentacyclic triterpenic diol in olive oil and its byproduct, olive pomace, frequently appears in food additives for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases because of its antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities.To develop new derivatives of erythrodiol (1), preparative biotransformations were investigated through Streptomyces griseus ATCC 13273, Penicilium griseofulvum CICC 40293, and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, and ten new (1a−1j) and one known metabolites were isolated. Their structures were elucidated by high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and onedimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, relative to 1, most metabolites exhibited lower toxicity and more potent inhibitory activities against nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. In particular, the glycosylated metabolite 1k showed a dramatically increased inhibitory effect with an IC 50 value of 2.40 μM, which is even lower than that of quercetin. Thus, biotransformation of erythrodiol is a viable strategy for discovering new triterpenes as food supplements with anti-inflammatory properties.

Globally, approximately 12% of the population is inflicted by various types of urolithiasis. Standard treatments are available both to avert and treat urolithiasis, but with significant adverse side effects. Pentacyclic triterpenes represent a group of naturally occurring compounds which holds immense potential as therapeutic for treating kidney stone. This review aims to provide an integrative description on how pentacyclic triterpenes can effectively treat calcium oxalate urolithiasis through various mechanisms such as antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, diuretic, and angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibition. Some of the pentacylic triterpenes which shows promising activities include lupeol, oleanolic acid, betulin, and taraxasterol. Moreover, future perspectives in the development of pentacyclic triterpenes in formulations/drugs for urinary stone prevention are highlighted. It is anticipated that compiled information would serve as a scientific baseline to advocate further investigations on the potential of pentacyclic triterpenes in urolithiasis remediation.
