Six new species of coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from endangered Phelsuma spp. geckoes (Sauria: Gekkonidae) of the Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius

Abstract: Abstract:Six new species of coccidia are described from endangered Phelsuma spp. geckoes (Sauria: Gekkonidae) endemic to Mauritius, Indian Ocean. Five new species (3 Eimeria and 2 Isospora species) are described from Phelsuma rosagularis Vinson et Vinson; all lack a micropyle and an oocyst residuum, and all have a sporocyst residuum. Oocysts of Eimeria swinnertonae sp. n. are ellipsoidal, 22.2 × 17. 8 (20.8-24.8 × 16.8-18.4) μm; SI 1.25; polar granule absent. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal, 8.8 × 7.0 (8.0-9.6 × 6.… Show more

“…This separate generic status of the eimerians inhabiting the gallbladders of reptilian hosts was definitively confirmed through the molecular phylogenetic studies of Jirků et al (2002). As a result, the designation of Eimeria-like coccidia species from reptiles to the correct genus requires the examination of either the endogenous stages or molecular studies, especially when its oocysts are elliptical in shape, its sporulation is endogenous and its sporocysts lack Stieda and substieda bodies (Daszak et al 2009;Abdel-Baki et al 2014). In the present work, we have unambiguously demonstrated that the gallbladder was the only site for the endogenous development of our delineated species and that no endogenous stages were detected in the intestine.…”
