Situational maturity models as instrumental artifacts for organizational design

Abstract: In order to identify and explore the strength and weaknesses of particular organizational designs, a wide range of maturity models have been developed by both, practitioners and academics over the past years. However, a systematization and generalization of the procedure on how to design maturity models as well as a synthesis of design science research with the rather behavioural field of organization theory is still lacking. Trying to combine the best of both fields, a first design proposition of a situationa… Show more

“…Translated towards maturity models, Mettler and Rohner [5] confirm that a common conceptualization is lacking. Consequently, for this research, we describe a BPMM as 'a model to assess and/or to guide best practice improvements in organizational maturity and process capability, expressed in lifecycle levels, by taking into account an evolutionary road map regarding (1) process modeling, (2) process deployment, (3) process optimization, (4) process management, (5) the organizational culture, and/or (6) the organizational structure' [6, p.1132-1133].…”

“…Research on BPMMs and maturity models in general is mostly situated in the second paradigm. For instance, the IS design research cycle has been translated towards maturity models [4,5]. It typically covers pre-design, design and post-design phases.…”

“…In this sense, maturity models contain two aspects, one capturing the assessment of the current status and another one guiding organizations towards higher maturity levels. In the context of Design Science the first aspect can be described as a model perspective describing various maturity levels (states) of organizations whereas the second aspect describes guidelines to improve the current situation of organizations in form of method components [12]. In order to transform organizations from one maturity level to another, usually the method component is described by "maturity curves" or "maturity profiles".…”
