Situation‐centered goal reinforcement of activities of daily living in smart home environments

Abstract: Older adults with early‐stage dementia (ED) can experience confusion or lack clarity when performing routine activities of daily living (ADLs). These circumstances predispose the older adult to safety‐critical and often risky situations. A safety‐critical risky situation is one that constitutes a hazard. To support independent living, a sensor‐laden smart environment can be employed to mitigate such hazards. In this paper, we propose a situation‐centered goal reinforcement framework that supports older adults … Show more

“…Secondly, safety is a key metric for evaluating the success of smart home environment, therefore, it is important for an older adult to be able to carry out activities of daily living safely while aging in place [18,53]. Therefore, the situ-context generator component uses a three- Thirdly, anticipation and detection of risky behaviors or situations in a person's goal path is not enough to mitigate potential risky or hazardous states, there is need to provide support to guide seniors in taking appropriate action to avert potential risk.…”

“…My current research has opened many interesting possibilities to the development of efficient and adaptive solutions for assisted living. My previous and current research case studies have so far focused on an end-to-end automated approach to supporting single activity and single user [14,53]. However, interleaving is a natural phenomenon that people tend to exhibit especially when they initiate parallel goals or activities, I plan to further investigate how parallel goals can be inferred within the context of smart home environment.…”
