Situation awareness and attention allocation measures for quantifying telepresence experiences in teleoperation

Abstract: This study assessed the utility of measures of situation awareness (SA) and attention allocation for quantifying telepresence, the sense of being present at a remote site, in a teleoperation task scenario. Attention and SA have been identified as cognitive constructs potentially underlying telepresence. The motivation for this research was to establish an objective measure of telepresence and investigate the relationship between telepresence and teleoperation performance. Twenty-four research participants perf… Show more

“…Examining the role of difficulty for a visual search task in a virtual environment, Riley et al (2004) found that greater presence lead to poorer performance. Similarly, Ma and Kaber (2006), using a virtual basketball hoop shooting task, demonstrated that presence was negatively related to task difficulty, and there was no association with performance.…”

“…With respect to fulldome content and technology design, the minimal requirements need to be considered for presence to be achieved and maintained while learners are exposed to given content (Slater, 2002). Objective measures of presence have utilized situational awareness or cue detection tasks for which user performance when responding to cues in the real world is compared to the virtual environment (Draper et al, 1998;Riley et al, 2004).…”

“…If we are able to demonstrate that users are engaged during an experience and that during the same experience, their level of attention (Schupp et al, 2007) to the resource is high, then we can affirm that their sense of presence is high and this increases an optimal experience of subjects through an higher involvement (Riley, Kaber, & Draper, 2004;Riva, Davide, & Ijsselsteijn, 2003).…”

“…In other words, a human being cannot efficiently perceive large chunks of information randomly presented at different intervals. Hence, teleoperation can be successful if the operator experiences a compelling illusion of what researchers' terms as telepresence [Riley 2004]. Telepresence means that the operator receives sufficient information about the vehicle environment, displayed in a sufficiently natural way such that the operator feels physically present at the remote site [Sheridan 1992].…”
