Abstract. Existing information systems often lack support to crisis and emergency situations. In such scenarios, the involved actors often engage in ad hoc collaborations necessary to understand and respond to the emerging events. We propose a collaboration model and a prototype aiming to improve the consistency and effectiveness of emergent work activities. Our approach defends the requirement to construct shared situation awareness (SA). To support SA, we developed a collaborative artifact named situation matrixes (SM), which relates different situation dimensions (SD) of the crisis/emergency scenario. A method was also developed to construct and evaluate concrete SM and SD. This method was applied in two organizations' IT service desk teams, which often have to deal with emergency situations. The target organizations found our approach very relevant in organizing their response to emergencies.

Over the past decade there has been an increased focus on the importance of contextual factors in all IT disciplines. At the same time, scholars have heeded the call for investigating the creation of more effective synergies between science and design. For example, the task-artifact (TA) framework was developed to support better utilization of behavioral, cognitive, and social science in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design. This framework is based on the general developmental pattern of human activities and technologiesteamed with two analytical tools for design. In this paper, we extend this framework from its original focus on individual and small group HCI to the organizational level utilizing organizational learning theory. This extension will (1) integrate relevant concepts and analysis drawn from the social sciences in order to guide design more effectively; (2) incorporate organizational level analysis, when we study information artifact design and appropriation; and (3) help organizations complete their learning circle.

Abstract. It is often argued that usability problems should be identified as early as possible during software development, but many usability evaluation methods do not fit well in early development activities. We propose a method for usability evaluation of use cases, a widely used representation of design ideas produced early in software development processes. The method proceeds by systematic inspection of use cases with reference to a set of guidelines for usable design. To validate the method, four evaluators inspected a set of use cases for a health care application. The usability problems predicted by the evaluators were compared to the result of a conventional think-aloud test. About one fourth of the problems were identified by both think-aloud testing and use case inspection; about half of the predicted problems not found by think-aloud testing were assessed as providing useful input to early development. Qualitative data on the evaluators' experience using the method are also presented. On this background, we argue that use case inspection has a promising potential and discuss its limitations.
