Situated Learning Perspective for Online Approaches to Laboratory and Project Work

Abstract: The engineering laboratory in a university is where most students feel they are entering a place where engineering is done and practiced.  With the COVID-19 pandemic many Canadian universities closed theircampuses and teaching moved online. This closed off access to laboratories and their rich range of resourcesand experiences to students.  We use a situated learning framework to consider the online lab. To furtherreinforce the examination of the online approach we used the Kolb experiential learning cycle to … Show more

“…The research presented in this chapter was conducted in a Faculty of Engineering to what was found by [9]. In the PDS diagnostic survey, a series of open questions were asked, measured using the Likert scale and with dichotomous answers to identify quantitative and qualitative indicators such as: time spent online, method of internet access, devices used for internet connection (PC, cell phone, tablet), weekly hours dedicated to study; digital media or educational tools used by students for autonomous learning, preference in the teaching modality, knowledge and use of the virtual laboratory.…”

“…In situated learning, learners construct meaning from their experiences, action is grounded in authentic situations, and learning occurs in the social contexts in which new knowledge is to be applied [4]. Kolb's learning cycle is rooted in the individual's experience, but by combining this cycle with situated learning, we can emphasize the importance of an individual's experience within a community of practice as the way knowledge is constructed [24], [25]. Individual reflection is seen as a key process in situated workbased learning [26], depicting the individual's experience and how it is construed in the context of collective knowledge [27].…”
