The issue of impoliteness has long been a matter of interest in linguistic investigations. Considerable research has been conducted to uncover factors and features regarding the realizations of impoliteness in multiple social contexts. This study engages in a pragmatic inquiry into impoliteness in the marital relationship. The data of this study consisted of a TV episode from one famous on-site mediation reality program in China. Primarily drawing on Bousfield’s (2008) model of impoliteness realizations, this study used a qualitative approach to examine the means by which the couple in a marital relationship causes face-attacking effects and ultimately arouses conflicts. The primary findings of this study indicate that couples might struggle with various communicative challenges. A problematic marital relationship tends to be signaled in some practices of impoliteness. This study has identified thirteen realizations of impoliteness linguistically and behaviorally that indicate gender variations concerning the couple’s frequent impoliteness practices.

Slogans use a variety of language features to entice potential purchasers. For Indonesian products to compete worldwide successfully, companies must engage in more efficient marketing strategies, such as using English slogans. This study examines the linguistic aspects of English slogans produced by Indonesian brands. The question addressed in this research is related to linguistic aspects that occur in slogans. We collected a slogan corpus data consisting of 225 slogans. The slogans were taken from the Indonesian company’s product websites and marketplaces. The data were classified manually based on the linguistic aspects covering phonological style (Wales, 2011), word formation process, figurative language (Knowles Moon, 2006), and speech acts (Searle, 2005). We present the data in both qualitative description and quantitative analysis using simple statistical measures. The results show that alliteration, hyperbole, and assertive statements are noticeable patterns that Indonesian companies use to promote their products. The reason why sound repetition occurs in slogans is to make the slogan more memorable. A simple morphological process is employed to generate slogans, which also helps readers remember them. Furthermore, the use of hyperbole makes the audience feel connected to the product. Finally, assertiveness as a primary pragmatic strategy promotes product quality and buyer benefits. From a linguistics perspective, our findings shed light on the criteria for slogans to be memorable.

Hate comments on digital platforms, particularly social media, pose a significant threat to online investigations and present a complex issue for linguistic culture. Previous studies have mainly focused on the analysis of moderation strategies regarding this type of language use on the internet. In contrast, little attention has been given to identifying which hate comments on the internet are considered problematic. The current study investigates the phenomena of Indonesian netizens’ hate comments regarding the presidential election in 2024 on YouTube talk shows uploaded in 2023. By analyzing 315 datasets using Nvivo software, it shows that early warning (43%) is mostly employed by Indonesian netizens, followed by dehumanization and demonization (21%), violence and incitement (19%), and offensive language (17%) respectively. Moreover, it is found that anonymity and personality traits are the factors contributing to hate comments related to the 2024 presidential election. The factors influence Indonesian netizens in early-warning hate comments. The implications of the present study highlight the importance of examining the online behavior and language usage in online communication among Indonesian netizens. This understanding can help in mitigating hate comments on online platforms and in society as a whole.
