Sitting forward bending position versus standing position for studying the back shape in scoliotic children

Abstract: ObjectivePotential benefits of sitting position for scoliosis exam include stable posture and level pelvis. The hypothesis was that surface topography as well as scoliometer evaluation can be performed in sitting forward bending position and that the parameters describing deformity in the frontal and axial plane can be provided. Study designCross sectional study of 113 girls with idiopathic scoliosis, aged 14.0 ± 2.1 years (range 10 to 18), mean height 160.0 ± 9.4 cm (range 121 to 184), mean weight 48.6 ± 9.2 … Show more

“…In the screening conditions, the suspicion of idiopathic scoliosis is detected with manual anthropometric devices, such as the scoliometer [4043] or smartphone with a specific device [4446]. The basic method of school screening for idiopathic scoliosis is a clinical examination in the forward bending position (Adam’s test) with the use of scoliometer [47, 48] . Surface topography methods based on computerized image capturing and digitally calculated parameters are also proposed for the evaluation of patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis.…”

“…The basic method of school screening for scoliosis is clinical examination in forward bending position (Adams test) with the use of scoliometer which can be performed either in standing or in sitting position, Figure 1, [24,25]. The scoliometer measures the Angle of Trunk Rotation (ATR).…”

“…The position is standing forward bending (classical Adams test [17]); the sitting forward bending position [18,19] was also recommended. The sitting position claims to eliminate pelvic obliquity due to lower limb discrepancy.…”
