ObjectivesIt is essential to have simple, reliable and valid tests to measure children’s functional capacity in schools or medical practice. The 1-minute sit-to-stand (STS) test is a quick fitness test requiring little equipment or space that is increasingly used in both healthy populations and those with chronic disease. We aimed to provide age-specific and sex-specific reference values of STS test in healthy children and adolescents and to evaluate its short-term reliability and construct validity.Design setting and participantsCross-sectional convenience sample from six public schools and one science fair in central Europe. Overall, 587 healthy participants aged 5–16 years were recruited and divided into age groups of 3 years each.Outcomes1-minute STS. To evaluate short-term reliability, some children performed the STS test twice. To evaluate construct validity, some children also performed a standing long jump (SLJ) and a maximal incremental exercise test.ResultsData from 547 youth aged 5–16 years were finally included in the analyses. The median number of repetitions in 1 min in males (females) ranged from 55 [95% CI: 38 to 72] (53 [95% CI: 35 to 76]) in 14–16-year olds to 59 [95% CI: 41 to 77] (60 [95% CI: 38 to 77]) in 8–10-year olds. Children who repeated STS showed a learning effect of on average 4.8 repetitions more than the first test (95% limits of agreement: −6.7 to 16.4). Moderate correlations were observed between the STS and the SLJ (r=0.48) tests and the maximal exercise test (r=0.43).ConclusionsThe reported STS reference values can be used to interpret STS test performance in children and adolescents. The STS appears to have good test–retest reliability, but a learning effect of about 10%. The association of STS with other measures of physical fitness should be further explored in a larger study and technical standards for its conduct are needed.

Bronşektazi, kronik inflamasyon ve enfeksiyonun bronş duvarlarında oluşturduğu hasara bağlı olarak bir veya birden fazla bronşta meydana gelen dilatasyon ve harabiyet ile karakterize kronik bir akciğer hastalığıdır. Hastalığın yönetiminde pulmoner rehabilitasyon önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Hastalık yönetimine ilişkin çalışmaların çoğu yetişkin grubu kapsamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın amacı, pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili hastalarda pulmoner rehabilitasyonun etkinliğini araştırmaktır. PubMed, Cochrane Library, PEDro ve TRDizin veri tabanları Aralık 2021’e kadar arandı. Pediatrik, adolesan bronşektazi hastalarında pulmoner rehabilitasyon, hava yolu temizleme teknikleri ve egzersiz içerikli tedaviler uygulanan ya da rehabilitasyona katkı sağlayacağı düşünülen çalışmalar dahil edildi. Toplamda 161 makale bulundu. Tam metinler okunduktan sonra belirlenen dahil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan 7 çalışma seçildi. Pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili hastalarda pulmoner rehabilitasyonun etkisiyle hastalık semptomları azaltılıp yaşam kalitesi arttırılabilir. Gelecekteki çalışmalarla pediatrik ve adolesan bronşektazili gruba yönelik fiziksel aktivite ve egzersiz önerileri fikir birliğinden ziyade kanıta dayalı olarak verilebilir.

Objective To evaluate the functional and exercise capacity, lung function, quality of life of children and adolescents with sickle cell anemia (SCA HbSS) and to test the reproducibility of functional capacity tests in this population. Method Cross‐sectional study with volunteers with SCA Hb‐SS (SCAG), aged 6–18 years matched in age and gender to the control group (CG) with healthy individuals. Spirometry, 5‐repetition sit‐to‐stand test (5STS‐test), modified shuttle test (MST), and Pediatric Quality of Life Questionnaire (PedsQL) were performed. The reproducibility of 5STS‐test and MST was evaluated: Results Forty eight volunteers of SCAG and 48 of CG were evaluated. Lung function of SCAG (FVC: 92 ± 15% pred.; FEV1/FVC: 84 ± 8% pred.) was worse than the CG (104 ± 15% pred.; FEV1/FVC: 90 ± 6% pred.) p < 0.05. SCAG had worse functional capacity registered by distance walked: 576 m (515–672 m) and 5STS‐test: 8 s (7.4–8.9 s) compared with the CG who showed distance walked: 1010 m (887–1219 m) and 5STS‐test: 7 s (7.0–8.1 s), p < 0.001. SCAG had worse quality of life compared to CG, p < 0.05. The reproducibility of MST (ICC 0.99 (0.98–0.99 IC‐95%)) and 5STS‐test (ICC 0.80 (0.69–0.88) was considered good, p < 0.001. Conclusion Children and adolescents with sickle cell anemia presented worse capacity to walk or run, and to perform sit‐to‐stand test when compared with their control peers. Additionally, they have poorer quality of life. The MST and 5STS‐test showed good reproducibility to be applied in pediatric individuals with SCA.
