From December 2003 to September 2004, benthic macroinvertebrates (BM), fishes, water and sediment were collected quarterly at six stations in two streams of the upper São Francisco River basin, south-eastern Brazil. We evaluated the ecological conditions, habitat diversity, water quality, composition and structure of BM communities, as well as the food habits of the local fish fauna. By applying a protocol for rapid characterization of ecological conditions and habitat diversity, three of the sampled localities were classified as "pristine" while the others stations were considered "altered". A well oxygenated water with near neutral pH and low electric conductivity (< 0.01 mS/cm) and nutrient concentrations (< 0.08 mg/l total P and < 0.90 mg/l total N) was found for both streams. Sediment analysis revealed the dominance of medium, fine and very fine sand fractions in all sampled areas. The organic matter content in the sediment was higher in the lotic and well preserved area. We found 45 BM taxa, and Chironomidae (68%), Oligochaeta (10%) and Elmidae (8.5%) showed the highest abundances. From the stomach contents analysis of 13 fish species, 26 BM taxa were found, including four that were not collected in the sediment samples, being Chironomidae the dominant group (> 60%). Our results show that human activities such as forest clearing, agriculture and cattle rising have altered the habitat diversity in freshwater ecosystems in a process that affects the aquatic biota and thus the food availability to the fish fauna. The results also highlight the importance of the fish stomach contents analysis as a complementary tool in BM inventories.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to verify structure patterns in fish assemblages in mountain streams of the Rio Tibagi basin through the characterization of spatial and temporal variations in the composition of fish species. Samples were collected in three segments of the Varanal, João Pinheiro and Rio Preto streams. We collected 1154 specimens belonging to 21 species. The most abundant orders were Characiformes (59.01 ± 2.84%) and Siluriformes (39.34 ± 2.82%). Phalloceros harpagos was the most abundant species with 433 individuals, followed by Trichomycterus aff. davisi, with 292 individuals. No temporal variations (between seasons) were detected, but the cluster analysis suggests a separation of species composition between the segments closer to the headwaters and those more distant. The first two axes of the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) explained 80.09% of the variation in species abundance, and the variables that structured the fish assemblages in those streams were the stream width, depth, water speed, flow rate, conductivity and pH. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar padrões na estrutura de assembleias de peixes nos riachos de montanha da bacia do rio Tibagi através da caracterização de variações espaciais e temporais na composição de espécies de peixes. Foram realizadas coletas em três trechos dos riachos Varanal, João Pinheiro e Rio Preto. No total foram coletadas 21 espécies, em um total de 1154 indivíduos. As ordens mais abundantes foram Characiformes (59,01 ± 2,84%) e Siluriformes (39,34 ± 2,82%). Phalloceros harpagos foi a espécie mais abundante, com 433 indivíduos, seguida por Trichomycterus aff.davisi com 292 indivíduos. Não foi verificada variação temporal (entre estações), mas a análise de agrupamento sugere uma separação na composição de espécies entre os trechos mais próximos das nascentes dos trechos mais afastados. Os dois primeiros eixos da Análise de Correspondência Canônica (CCA) explicaram 80,09% da variação na distribuição em abundância das espécies de peixes, sendo que as variáveis que estruturam a assembleia de peixes nos riachos estudados foram a largura, a profundidade, a velocidade da água, a vazão, a condutividade e o pH dos riachos. Ichthyofaunistic surveys in the Atlantic Rainforest have been published in relatively few works, in spite of the major biological importance of this once vast biome which is rapidly vanishing due to disordered human population growth and natural resources overexploitation. The present study aimed to access the fish fauna of a relatively well preserved basin between the cities of Santos and Cubatão (SP), an area highly modified by human activities where recent ichthyofaunistic surveys are still missing. Collections were made during three field trips in Rio Jurubatuba, a medium sized costal river, and Riacho Sabão, one of its main tributaries. A total of 2773 specimens were sampled, representing 25 species from 14 families. Six species were primary marine using the upper reaches of Rio Jurubatuba. Twelve of the 19 freshwater species are endemic of the Atlantic Rainforest and four are present in regional lists of endangered species. Only five species occurred in both Rio Jurubatuba and Riacho Sabão. The most diverse family was Characidae, followed by Poeciliidae, Rivulidae and Heptapteridae. Phalloceros caudimaculatus was the most abundant species, followed by Poecilia vivipara and Geophagus brasiliensis. The study area is considered well preserved and due to its critical location, urges for conservation policies to protect its fish diversity.
