“…Third, a post‐rift sequence consists of marine and transitional stratigraphy that likely demark continental break‐up and the onset of ocean flooding (Pessoa Neto et al, 2007). This sequence is characterised by the occurrence of more than 100 m of salt and shallow marine facies (drilled in the Ceará Basin), and transitional deposits that record the first (pre‐break up; late Aptian) marine ingressions onto continental crust (Condé et al, 2007; Regali, 1989). This sequence has been identified as part of the sag (post‐rift) stage of the tectonic evolution of the basin (Morais Neto et al, 2003).…”

“…Upper Aptian‐lower Albian stratigraphy is represented by the Paracuru Fm, which contains up to 1000 m of fine to coarse grained sandstones and shales (Beltrami et al, 1994; Costa et al, 1990). The Paracuru Fm includes sandstones and bioturbated clays of fluvial, deltaic and lacustrine origin characterised by planar‐parallel seismic facies (Figures 4 and 5; Beltrami et al, 1994; Morais Neto et al, 2003), passing upwards to prevalent shales of marine origin (Regali, 1989). The succession, representing a transitional sequence from continental to marine depositional conditions, was referred to the sag phase of the rifting margin (Morais Neto et al, 2003).…”
