Intercropping is an agricultural practice consisting in planting two or several crops in the same field simultaneously. This production system appeared to offer an excellent several advantages. While intercropping has been widely practiced since ancestral times, there was a lack of data in Rwanda on the kind of intercrops mostly used and on farmers' perception of their utility and constraints. The main objectives of this work were (1) to assess the different food crops associated with coffee trees in Rwanda and (2) to determine the perception of farmers on the role of intercropping system. That was why a field survey was carried out between August 25 th , 2014 and February 28 th , 2015 in Kamonyi District of Rwanda. Seventy-five coffee producers were randomly selected and contacted to fill a questionnaire on their practices. The correlation between yield and pesticide application were performed using R version. The significance level P was set at 0.05. Results revealed that common beans (Pheseolus vulgaris L.) and soybeans (Glycine max L.) were the most coffee intercropped plants. It appeared that intercropping was practiced to ensure the production of staple crops beside coffee. Insecticide remained the main way to control coffee pests and there was thus an important work to find alternative solutions that are often ecologically non-disruptive. Plant breeders and extension agents should investigate plants that are suitable to intercrop with coffee trees in order to enhance the conservation agriculture.

The use of plant biostimulants jointly or without macro or micro fertilization may be an alternative to change plant metabolism and consequently, improve bean crop yield. Under this circumstance, we aim to evaluate the influence of biostimulants and its interaction with macro and micronutrient fertilizers on common bean var. Pérola yield in Bahia State (BA). The research started on 12 December, 2013 in the experimental farm of the State University of Southwestern Bahia (UESB), campus in Vitória da Conquista-BA, Brazil. The experimental design used was the total randomized block with three replications, arranged in a factorial scheme (2x2x4) under two macronutrient fertilization levels (present or absent) and four biostimulants (Control, Stimulate, Booster and Biozyme), in which doses followed manufacturer recommendation for common bean crop. The following traits were assessed: plant height, stem diameter, first pod height, pod number, pod length, grain per plant, 100-grain dry mass and yield. The data was submitted to variance analysis, and means were compared by "F" and Scott Knott tests at 5% probability. We found that biostimulants enhanced common bean yield with or without macro and/ or micronutrient supply.

O manejo cultural nas estrelinhas do cafeeiro pode influenciar diretamente na produtividade da cultura. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o crescimento inicial de clones de cafeeiro robusta, irrigados por gotejamento, submetidos a diferentes manejos culturais nas entrelinhas. A área de pesquisa foi conduzida em uma lavoura cafeeira com 30 dias de transplantada até aproximadamente 12 meses, adotando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por cinco cultivos distintos nas entrelinhas do cafeeiro: vegetação espontânea (plantas daninhas), milho e feijão em sucessão, estilosantes campo grande, Brachiaria ruziziensis e ausência de vegetação (limpo). Avaliaram-se as características biométricas do cafeeiro: altura de planta, diâmetro da copa, diâmetro do caule, e número de ramos plagiotrópicos do cafeeiro; a densidade, umidade e porosidade do solo até os 0,40 m de profundidade; índice de Clorofila Falker e trocas gasosas entre as 7h-18h. O manejo com vegetação espontânea e B. ruziziensis interferiram negativamente no diâmetro da copa e nos índices de clorofila do cafeeiro. Maiores valores de transpiração (2,67 mmol m-2 s-1) foram observados na ausência de cobertura, e os menores valores (2,19 mmol m-2 s-1) no cultivo com milho e feijão em sucessão. As trocas gasosas não são influenciadas pela presença do consórcio cultural nas entrelinhas e, são mais efetivas no início da manhã e final da tarde. Pode-se adotar manejos com estilosantes; milho e feijão em sucessão; e ausência de vegetação nas entrelinhas do cafeeiro em fase de formação.
