SiO_2-clad fibers with selectively volatilized soft-glass cores

Abstract: By using a thick-walled SiO(2) tube (25-mm outside diameter, 1-mm inside diameter), a soft-glass core containing Nd or Yb-Er has its alkali (and to a lesser extent its alkaline earth) components volatilized during drawing to give a good-quality laser fiber with Nd- or Yb-Er-doped cores.

“…On a different front, the IR transparency of crystalline semiconductors (Section 2) have invited efforts to draw semiconductor-core, glass-cladding fibers [389][390][391] with the amorphous cladding facilitating the drawing procedure (Section 3). Several semiconductors have been drawn continuously in this fashion, ranging from elemental semiconductors such as Si [391] and Ge [79] to compounds such as InSb [16].…”

“…A rod-in-tube (RIT) method was used to assemble the Cr 4+ -doped YAG/silica preform [3]. The silica tube was tapered in one end to form a cone shape in order to hold the Cr 4+ -doped YAG crystal rod and then a Cr 4+ -doped YAG crystal rod [4] was inserted into the tube to constitute the preform.…”

“…13 The diameter and length of the Cr 4+ -doped YAG crystal were 3 mm and 5 cm, respectively. The silica tube was tapered at one end to form a cone shape to hold the Cr 4+ -doped YAG crystal rod, 14 which was then inserted into the tube to constitute the preform.…”
