“…Lanthanides ions, benzotriazoles, 8-hydroxyquinoline, propargyl alcohol or red mud (waste from the production of aluminium by the Bayer method, consisting of iron and titanium oxides and silicon compounds) is commonly used for this purpose [85,[93][94][95][96][97]. Also, hybrid coatings are produced [82,85,91,92,[98][99][100]. The inorganic groups form covalent bonds with the native oxide film present on the metallic substrate, whilst the organic groups contact the painting systems.…”

“…Research has reported that the addition of nanoparticles helps to increase thickness of the films [5,9,27], and improve mechanical and barrier properties leading to corrosion resistance [6,7,12,28,29]. However, in order to develop high performance coatings with nano-additives, it is important to incorporate an optimum loading level of nanoparticles with the appropriate surface chemistry to provide good compatibility and dispersion in the base coating matrix.…”

“…Pepe et al [65] evaluated the presence of cerium ions in silica sol-gel coatings and the results clearly indicated that there is an inhibition of the corrosion by cerium salts which migrate thorough the coating to the site of the attack and then react to passivate the site. Another work based on the development of silica coatings doped with TiO 2 -CeO 2 nanoparticles is presented by Zaharescu et al [66]. In this work, the binary powder plays a dual key role in the resultant hybrid inorganic-organic films.…”
