Abstract. Subsidence was measured for the first time on railway tracks in the central sector of Ebro Valley (NE Spain) using Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) techniques. This area is affected by evaporite karst and the analysed railway corridors traverse active sinkholes that produce deformations in these infrastructures. One of the railway tracks affected by slight settlements is the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line, a form of transport infrastructure highly vulnerable to ground deformation processes. Our analysis based on DInSAR measurements and geomorphological surveys indicates that this line shows dissolution-induced subsidence and compaction of anthropogenic deposits (infills and embankments). Significant sinkhole-related subsidence was also measured by DInSAR techniques on the Castejón-Zaragoza conventional railway line. This study demonstrates that DInSAR velocity maps, coupled with detailed geomorphological surveys, may help in the identification of the railway track sections that are affected by active subsidence.

Synopsis/Abstract 153 wordsGypsum dissolves rapidly underground and at the surface forming gypsum karst features that include caves, subsidence areas and sinkholes. Mapping these landforms, understanding the gypsum karst and local hydrogeology, and producing sinkhole susceptibility and hazard maps are crucial for development and public safety. Situations that change the local hydrogeology, such as dams, water abstraction or injection/drainage, can accelerate dissolution and subsidence processes increasing the severity of the problems; dams and canals built on gypsum karst can leak or fail catastrophically. Gypsum karst problems can be mitigated by careful surveying and scientific investigation followed by phased preventive planning, ground investigation and construction incorporating sinkhole-proof designs. Towns and cities, including parts of Paris (France), Dzerzhinksk (Russia), Madrid and Zaragoza (Spain), Birzai (Lithuania) and Ripon and Darlington (UK), are developed on such ground requiring local planning guidelines and special construction methods. Roads, railways, pipelines and bridges are particularly vulnerable to such subsidence and require special consideration.

Sinkholes commonly form by subsurface dissolution cavities that collapse after the overlying layers become mechanically unsupported. Sinkholes along the Dead Sea shorelines are preceded by, associated with, and followed by gradual surface subsidence that accompanies the cavities' growth. We exploit satellite radar interferometry (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) to resolve temporal and spatial relationships between gradual subsidence and sinkhole collapse. The geometry of the deflating cavity roof is determined by elastic inverse modeling of the surface displacements. A Coulomb failure stress criterion is applied to calculate the stress field induced by the deflating cavity at the ground surface. We find that the induced stress field favors generation of sinkholes at the perimeters of the subsiding areas rather than at their centers, in agreement with field observations, providing important information for sinkhole hazard assessment. Further, our analysis suggests that short‐term deformation in consolidated gravel layers at shallow depths could be approximated by simple elastic modeling.
