Single‐step approach to β‐cyclodextrin‐bonded silica as monolithic stationary phases for CEC

Abstract: A novel single-step sol-gel approach for the preparation of beta-CD-bonded silica monolithic electrochromatographic columns is established. The porous silica networks were fabricated inside fused-silica capillaries using sol-gel processing of tetramethoxysilane and an organfunctional silicon alkoxide that contains beta-CD. Scanning electron micrographs and nitrogen adsorption-desorption data showed that these functional monolithic columns have double pores structures with micrometer-size co-continuous through-… Show more

“…The high specific surface area, thermal and mechanical stability, highly uniform pore distribution, and tunable pores of ordered mesoporous silicas obtained with template sol–gel synthesis may provide greater accessibility of guest molecules to β-CD binding sites. Several attempts were made to introduce β-CD moieties into silica thought co-condensation of silica alkoxides with β-CD-containing organosilanes [28, 30, 32, 33, 37]. In most of these studies, the pore expander was used to obtain the pores of sufficient size.…”

“…9,35,36 Various volume ratios of HOAc and TEA added to methanol as mobile phase were selected for assessing effect on enantioseparation at 25°C and a flow rate of 0.3 mL/minute. The additives in mobile phase are critical for the enantioseparation, and the effect of acid and base additives has been previously reported by a number of studies.…”

“…Interestingly, Ahmed et al. indicated that the single‐step or one‐pot approaches were beneficial to the reproducibility of CD‐functionalized monoliths and CD loadability as compared to the two‐step approach, whereas Svec et al. held the view that the single‐step approach was limited in that some functionalities may not be accessible in the copolymerization.…”
