Single-Session Treatment of Benign Cystic Thyroid Nodules with Ethanol versus Radiofrequency Ablation: A Prospective Randomized Study

Abstract: Purpose:To compare volume reduction of single-session ethanol ablation (EA) and radiofrequency (RF) ablation for cystic thyroid nodule treatment. Materials and Methods:All patients gave written informed consent to participate in this prospective institutional review board-approved study. From May 6, 2010, to August 8, 2011, in this singleinstitutional, noninferiority trial, 50 patients, each with a single cystic thyroid nodule, were randomly assigned to EA (25 patients; mean age for women, 45.7 years, and for … Show more

“…Three orthogonal nodule diameters, including the largest diameter, are measured by US to assess nodule volume using the following equation: V = pabc/6, where V is the volume, a is the maximum diameter, and b and c are the other two perpendicular diameters [33,34,37,41,43,[45][46][47][48][49]. Laboratory tests usually include a complete blood count, a blood coagulation battery, measurements of thyrotrophin, thyroid hormones, thyroid auto-antibodies, and calcitonin concentrations.…”

“…Thinner (18-G or 19-G) internally cooled multi-tined (0.5-1-1.5 cm) electrode needles were later developed specifically for thyroid lesions, to make control of the needle easier, minimizing normal tissue injury [41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49].…”

“…However, in cystic lesions, a similar therapeutic success is obtained using PEI, which is an easier and less expensive technique [33,34]. When after PEI symptoms persist, together with a residual solid portion in the treated nodule, one or more RF sessions can be useful to complete the ablation process [35,36].…”
