“…The occurrence of mammosomatotrophs was reported in human nontumorous pituitaries as well (Horvath et al, 1979). The immunohistochemistry and electron-microscopic features of human pituitary bihormonal adenomas producing PRL and GH have been described Halmi, 1982;Duello and Halmi, 1979;Ishikawa et al, 1983;Kovacs et al, 1984;Bassetti et al, 1986;Felix et al, 1986;Kovacs and Horvath, 1986a). Hormone colocalization in bihorm o d cells other than mammosomatotrophs was reported as well (Beck-Peccoz et al, 1986;Horvath and Kovacs, 1988;Osamura and Watanabe, 1987).…”

“…By indirect method comparing adjacent sections at the electron microscope, coexistence of both GH and PRL in the same cell granule was shown to be highly probable (Ishikawa et al 1983). More recently, the coexistence of GH and PRL in the same pituitary cell was suggested using a protein A gold method (Bassetti et al 1986) and an immunogold method (Felix et al 1986 Fumagalli G & Zanini A (1985): In cow anterior pitui¬ tary, growth hormone and prolactin can be packed in separate granules of the same cell.…”

“…Apart from revealing the AP ultrastructure and the specific functions of its secretory cells (as mentioned above), some particular aspects were reported concerning the secretion of AP hormones in abnormal conditions. Thus, Ishikawa et al (1983) found two hormones (GH and PRL) packed in the same secretory granules in pituitary adenoma cells. On the other hand, experimentally induced hypersecretion of AP cells, with enlargement of the secretory granules was reported in rats following castration (Farquhar & Rinehart, 1954 a ; Inoue & Kurosumi, 1981), and thyroidectomy (Farquhar & Rinehart, 1954 b ).…”
