Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms of Pfdhfr and Pfdhps Genes: Implications for Malaria Prophylactic Strategies in Maiduguri, Northeast Nigeria

Abstract: Background. The success of Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Pregnancy (IPTp), Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Infancy (IPTi), and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) depends on sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) efficacy. Objective. The study determined Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) of Plasmodium falciparum dihydrofolate reductase (Pfdhfr) and dihydropteroate synthase (Pfdhps) in Maiduguri, Northeast Nigeria. Materials and Methods. Giemsa-stained blood smears, capillary blood, and dried blood … Show more

“…A double-blind, randomized, and controlled superiority clinical trial comparing a three-course IPTp with SP, and a three-course IPTp with DP was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Maiduguri, Nigeria. The trial setting is a high transmission and mesoendemic area for malaria infections with emerging SP resistance [13,14].…”
