Single mode rib optical waveguide modeling techniques

Abstract: Abstracl -In this paper, a single mode rib optical waveguide is modeled using three distinct methods which include the finite difference method (FD), effective index method (El) and two dimensional beam propagation method (2D-BPM). Starting from the fundamental equations of Maxwell's, the functionalities of the said methods in solving the wave equation are discussed. Using a standard rib optical waveguide structure, comparisons between the methods are made in terms of normalized propagation constant values and… Show more

“…2(e)). The etching depth of the core layer for the lateral confinement is determined based on numerical simulations in order to obtain single-mode waveguide in this direction [13]. Then, a SiO 2 film (upper cladding) of 2 lm is deposited to cover the core layer ( Fig.…”

“…The process for the fabrication of channel waveguide using BCB 4024 -40 is similar to a thin film multi-chip module process. According to our previous simulation [7], to produce a single-mode waveguide using this material structure, the core thickness needs to be about 4 m. Hence, the coating speed of 3000 rpm and 4 m of mask opening are chosen to realize a single-mode square structure. In order to maintain good adhesion with the substrate layer, AP3000 adhesion promoter was spin coated on the substrates before polymer coating.…”
