Single maximal versus combination punch kinematics

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of punch type (Jab, Cross, Lead Hook and Reverse Hook) and punch modality (Single maximal, 'In-synch' and 'Out of synch' combination) on punch speed and delivery time. Ten competition-standard volunteers performed punches with markers placed on their anatomical landmarks for 3D motion capture with an eight-camera optoelectronic system. Speed and duration between key moments were computed. There were significant differences in contact speed between punch type… Show more

“…El-Ashker (2011) also found straight punches to be the most frequently used punch in boxing, arguing that they are the most efficient. Certainly, straight punches appear to be quicker to reach their intended target than other punches (Piorkowski, Lees, & Barton, 2011). While the observed data suggests UK fighters tended to use more punching techniques overall than their Thai counterparts, this difference was not significant.…”

“…In boxing bouts, jabs may be used as a tactical or "setup" punch to create an opportunity for a subsequently delivered powerful cross or bent arm punch. 4 Even though the current participants were given consistent instructions to punch as hard and fast as possible, jabs might have been subconsciously used as a preparation technique before crosses, therefore showing higher performance variability. 12 Accordingly, focus of attention may influence punch force performance 25 and participants may have consciously or unconsciously focused their attention on crosses.…”

“…Jabs also showed the poorest reliability (CVs of 4.4%‐13.6% on day 2) with crosses showing the greatest (CVs of 2.0%‐6.8% on day 2). “…Kicking and punching are the key component of kickboxers. To be effective, they require a high level of both speed and power [10, 42, 43]. In this context, it has been suggested that the ability to produce high muscular power is one of the major fundamental prerequisites underlying successful performance among amateur and elite kickboxers [44].…”
