Single machine scheduling with time-dependent linear deterioration and rate-modifying maintenance

Abstract: We study single machine scheduling problems with linear time-dependent deterioration e¤ects and maintenance activities. Maintenance periods (MPs) are included into the schedule, so that the machine, that gets worse during the processing, can be restored to a better state. We deal with a job-independent version of the deterioration e¤ects, i.e., all jobs share a common deterioration rate. However, we introduce a novel extension to such models and allow the deterioration rates to change after every MP. We study … Show more

“…In addition, we identified alternative approaches to model the learning effect, using a perceptron neural network learning algorithm [72]. We also found some articles corresponding to the inclusion of rate-modifying activities (RMA) [73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80], which changes the processing conditions in a system and adjusts the production rate of a resource. Two examples are maintenance activities or rest periods, which usually increase production rates.…”

“…Of course, many extended variants of SMTWT were developed such as Single machine scheduling with time-dependent linear deterioration and rate-modifying maintenance (Rustogi, & Strusevich, 2015), and Two-agent single machine scheduling with forbidden intervals (Qi Feng, & Li, & Shang, 2015), and many others. However, this paper focuses on the basic SMTWT as a validation problem for the proposed discrete Fireworks Algorithm.…”
