Single crystals and light-transmitting BeO-ceramic for electronic technology

Abstract: Problems are discussed for the preparation and physicochemical properties of beryllium oxide and light-transmitting BeO-ceramic as promising materials for electronic technology.Ceramics and single crystals of beryllium oxide (BeO) are distinguished from other alkali-earth metal oxides by high refractoriness and melting temperature (~2750 K) [1,2], and they are considered [3] as promising materials for quantum electronics. It is well known that BeO is a good dielectric material with a broad forbidden zone (~10.… Show more

“…Its oxide is a very good heat conductor, but at the same time is an excellent electrical insulator used in telecommunications and in ceramics. [14][15][16][17] Its chloride derivative catalyzes the Friedel-Crafts reaction and forms many interesting complexes. 1 Be and its compounds are however very toxic, mainly if inhaled as dust leading to the so-called chronic beryllium disease.…”

“…Beryllium ceramic is a most promising material for quantum electronics, where it is used in powerful ion and molecular gas optical quantum generators as dielectric tubes of optical resonators and hollow dielectric waveguides in waveguide gas discharge lasers of the central IR-range (1,3,5]. Light-transmitting BeO-ceramic is considered as a new material for creating solid-state lasers in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum [7]. Recently BeO-ceramic has been used as a material for high-voltage insulators in chambers with magnetic compression in order to obtain high-temperature magnetized hydrogen plasma, within which there is thermonuclear reaction [1].…”
