Single-Crystalline Gold Nanowires Synthesized from Light-Driven Oriented Attachment and Plasmon-Mediated Self-Assembly of Gold Nanorods or Nanoparticles

Abstract: Through the light-driven geometrically oriented attachment (OA) and self-assembly of Au nanorods (NRs) or nanoparticles (NPs), single-crystalline Au nanowires (NWs) were synthesized by the irradiation of a linearly-polarized (LP) laser. The process was conducted in a droplet of Au colloid on a glass irradiated by LP near-infrared (e.g. 1064 nm and 785 nm) laser beam of low power at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, without any additive. The FE-SEM images show that the cross sections of NWs are various… Show more

“…For biological applications, these protocols pose a serious problem of contamination of the nanostructure by the toxic cationic additives used for their preparation [26]. Fusion of linear aggregates by laser irradiation and not by chemical reaction has also been reported [16,27]. We report here the synthesis of gold nanowires under milder conditions.…”

“…In this case, the AuNWs tended to form a stack of parallel bundles which then self-assembled into 2-D network structures over macroscopic distances through spontaneous directional aggregation that occurs during solvent evaporation. The directional aggregation is typically formed via oriented attachment in which AuNWs are permitted to fuse together as the chemical potential between each chain is different [54]. Therefore, the smoothing extension process to interconnect the nanoparticles of the nanowires takes place through diffusion.…”

“…As mentioned earlier, the ensemble of GNRs displays distinct properties arising from the coupling of surface plasmons, and the interaction of electric or magnetic moments among particles collectively, or through external fields. Organizing GNRs into self-assemblies shows potential applications as electrodes for light-harvesting devices, electrochemical cells, conductive platforms for plasmon-enhanced imaging, solar cells, photodetectors, and plasmonic waveguides [3,17,18]. The bottom-up self-assembly approach miniaturizes modern optoelectronic devices while offering an alternative to conventional top-down nanodevice fabrication.…”
