Single crystal X-ray structure of (Z)-1-bromo-1-nitro-2-phenylethene

Abstract: The title compound -(Z)-1-bromo-1-nitro-2-phenylethene -was prepared by a three-step reaction. Its structure was confirmed by spectral analysis as well as X-ray crystallography. It was found, that the compound crystallized in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbca, a=11.5296(6)Å, b=7.5013(5)Å, c=19.7187(12)Å, α=β=γ=90°, Z=8.

“…The literature describes many methods for the preparation of conjugated nitroalkenes (CNA). Most universal strategies are based on the thermal or catalytic decomposition of nitroalkyl esters [37][38][39][40][41] and dehydrohalogenation of 1,2-dihalo-1-nitroethane derivatives [35,42]. Unfortunately, all these protocols are inadequate for preparation of 2-aryl-1-cyano-1-nitroethenes.…”

“…Under catalytic conditions, the one step or stepwise biradical mechanism, is replaced to the stepwise E1CB-like mechanism. This strategy was applied inter alia for the synthesis of 2phenyl-1-bromo-1-nitroethene [60] (Fig. 15.).…”

“…Product with 90% yield was obtained. Next, (Z)-2-phenyl-1-bromo-1-nitroethene was prepared by dehydrobromination of 2-phenyl-1,2-dibromo-1-nitroethane in the presence of pyridine according to the previously described procedure 16 . ).…”
