Single crystal study of the layered heavy fermion compounds Ce2PdIn8, Ce3PdIn11, Ce2PtIn8 and Ce3PtIn11

Abstract: We report on single crystal growth and crystallographic parameters results of Ce 2 PdIn 8 , Ce 3 PdIn 11, Ce 2 PtIn 8 and Ce 3 PtIn 11 . The Pt-systems Ce 2 PtIn 8 and Ce 3 PtIn 11 are synthesized for the first time. All these compounds are member of the Ce n T m In 3n+2m (n = 1, 2,..; m = 1, 2,.. and T = transition metal) to which the extensively studied heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn 5 belongs. Single crystals have been grown by In self-flux method. Differential scanning calorimetry studies were used to… Show more

“…Its surrounding atoms are identical with those of the Ce-ions in Ce 2 PdIn 8 . Preliminary results on Ce 3 PdIn 11 revealed two successive magnetic transitions at T 1  ≈ 1.7 K and T N  ≈ 1.5 K and a pronounced enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient8. Our extended low- T experiments presented here show that below T c  = 0.42 K the compound enters a HF superconducting state, suggesting coexistence of long-range magnetic order and HF superconductivity in Ce 3 PdIn 11 at ambient pressure.…”

“…In this work we present first low-temperature magnetization, specific heat and resistivity measurements on the recently78 discovered HF system Ce 3 PdIn 11 . The compound belongs to the Ce n T m In 3 n +2 m class of layered materials which comprises a numerous amount of compounds including CeCoIn 5 , CeRhIn 5 and Ce 2 RhIn 8  91011.…”

“…Details about crystal growth and characterization can be found in Ref. [12]. The magnetic susceptibility in the temperature range from 1.8 to 300 K was determined utilizing a commercial MPMS 7 T SQUID magnetometer from Quantum Design (QD) with an applied field of 0.1 T. For the low temperature experiments the sample was mounted to a Leiden Cryogenics MCK72 dilution refrigerator.…”

“…The Ce 2 Rh 1-x Pd x In 8 single crystals have been grown from In self-flux by a technology procedure analogous to the one used for Ce 2 PdIn 8 [3,15] and CeRh 1−x Pd x In 5 [19]. The growth composition Ce:Rh 1-y Pd y :In = 2:1:30 was chosen for samples with lower Pd content y ≤ 0.5; for the samples with y ≥ 0.5, the stoichiometry 1:3:45-55 was used as it improved the homogeneity and avoided the growth of undesired phases such as CeIn 3 similarly to the growth procedure of Ce 2 PdIn 8 described in literature [15].…”

“…The compound has been linked to CeCoIn 5 because of its ambient-pressure superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid behavior [18]. Because the growth of pure Ce 2 PdIn 8 single crystals has turned out to be very difficult, only a very limited number of measurements performed on pure single crystalline samples have been reported [3,15] and no attempt of tuning of the quantum criticality by substitution has been made. According to a recent study [19] of the related CeRh 1-x Pd x In 5 system, the AF state of CeRh 1-x Pd x In 5 is almost independent of the Pd content (up to x = 0.25) while the pressureinduced superconductivity is enhanced.…”
