Single-camera, three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry

Abstract: This paper introduces single-camera, three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (SC3D-PTV), an image-based, single-camera technique for measuring 3-component, volumetric velocity fields in environments with limited optical access, in particular, optically accessible internal combustion engines. The optical components used for SC3D-PTV are similar to those used for two-camera stereoscopic-µPIV, but are adapted to project two simultaneous images onto a single image sensor. A novel PTV algorithm relying on t… Show more

“…This section provides an overview of the foundational principles and performance of the singlecamera 3D velocimetry measurement technique, previously developed at the University of Michigan [9]. The single-camera, 3-D particle tracking velocimetry (SC3D -PTV) technique is a compact diagnostic tool recently developed for performing three-component volumetric velocity (3C3D) measurements in a limited measurement volume.…”

“…If a particle image is included in more than one four-image set, only the four-image set with the highest degree of similar features is retained. Particle image similarity is evaluated using seven features: 1) peak intensity 2) summed intensity 3) total number of pixels 4) width, as measured in pixels 5) height, as measured in pixels 6) maximum value of a cross-correlation between zero-padded raw particle images 7) maximum value of a normalized cross-correlation between zero-padded binarized particle images [9].…”

“…For example, a laser cluster, a scanning mirror, and a custom-made camera cluster were used to resolve the 3D structures of mixture fields and flames within an engine [13]. Progress towards volumetrically resolved measurements in combustion processes were achieved through a combination of tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV) [14] and flame front measurements [10,15], as well as a single-camera particle tracking technique for small-scale measurements [16]. Recently, fast-scanning setups have enabled the 3D imaging of structures [17,18], including those revealed from hydroxyl radicals through laser-induced fluorescence [19,20].…”
