BACKGROUND Copper–ammonia‐containing wastewater is widely generated in various industrial sectors, such as semiconductor production, printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, surface finishing, and electroplating processes. Three chemical precipitation methods, i.e. hydroxide precipitation, sulfide precipitation and struvite formation for treatment of chelated copper–ammonia wastewater have been comparatively evaluated. RESULTS The conventional hydroxide precipitation method possessed the highest copper and ammonia removal at 60.5% and 9.7%, respectively. Although sulfide precipitation decomposed the copper–ammonia complex with the high copper removal of 98.5%, the ammonia removal was just 14.0%. The struvite formation method was demonstrated to be effective for enhanced simultaneous copper and ammonia removal with efficiencies of 99.9% and 98.8%, respectively. UV–vis analysis indicated that the struvite formation method also decomposed the copper–ammonia complex ion. Using XPS and XRD spectra, struvite and cupric hydroxide were shown to be formed after the addition of magnesium and phosphate (with molar ratio n(Mg:P):n(NH3‐N) ranging from 1.0–1.2:1). The larger particle size of the precipitates in the struvite forming process and the enhanced settling property indicated the binding interaction between Cu(OH)2 and struvite which enhanced the sedimentation and finally contributed to the simultaneous and highly efficient removal of copper and ammonia from the recalcitrant chelated wastewater. CONCLUSION The struvite formation method performs far better than hydroxide precipitation and sulfide precipitation methods. Binding interaction between cupric hydroxide and struvite enhanced the performance. This study provides some guidance on application of the struvite formation method for the simultaneous removal of heavy metal and ammonia from polluted water. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

A natural zeolite (Z-N), rich in clinoptilolite, was modified (Z-Al) by incorporation of hydrated aluminum oxide (HAlO) for the simultaneous phosphate and ammonium removal. The incorporation of surface hydroxyl groups (≅Al-OH) into the zeolite structure, as active groups for phosphate removal, was characterized by acid-base titrations (pHPZC=4.5±0.2). The phosphate sorption increases from 0.6 mg-P/g for Z-N up to 7.0 mg-P/g while only a slight decrease on the ammonium sorption capacity from 33 mg-N/g of Z-N to 30 mg-N/g for Z-Al was observed. The HAlO modified zeolite sorption capacity for both phosphate and ammonium was slightly reduced by common ions typically present in secondary waste water effluents. Column experiments revealed higher enrichment factor for ammonium (120) than for phosphate (50) using 1 M NaOH as elution solution. A reduction of zeolite phosphate capacity with regeneration cycles was observed.

Nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater remains one of the serious environmental problems worldwide. The present study was aimed at combining the both nitrification and phosphorus accumulation processes in the laboratory-scale model system. Synthetic wastewaters (28 mg N-NH 4 + L -1 ) were treated consequently in the cascade of three columns, which were designed for nitrification and phosphorus accumulation processes, respectively, and were packed with porous ceramic beads. Six treatment cycles of seven days in each column were performed. Addition of 3% ethanol to wastewater increased the efficiency of ammonium removal in the first column of the cascade during the 7 day period to 81.9 %, which was accompanied by a decrease of pH from 7.3 to 6.2. An increase of soluble phosphates was shown in Columns II and III of the cascade. Microbial enzyme activity, number of CFU and diversity of the microbial community differed among the three columns tested. The most active biofilm formation was detected in Column I. The thermal analysis of beads has revealed mass losses of 0.23% and 0.08%, due to decomposition of light volatile organic substances at 173 C and 481 C, respectively. In turn, the beads in Column II and III were not covered by thick biofilm, while blue crystals were found on the surface. Accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus on the beads was detected. Vegetation experiments have revealed some stimulation effect of the beads applied as an amendment to loamy sand soil, to the growth of rye and cress.
