Simultaneous real-time EEG-fMRI neurofeedback: A systematic review

Abstract: Neurofeedback (NF) is a biofeedback technique that teaches individuals self-control of brain functions by measuring brain activations and providing an online feedback signal to modify emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functions. NF approaches typically rely on a single modality, such as electroencephalography (EEG-NF) or a brain imaging technique, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI-NF). The introduction of simultaneous EEG-fMRI tools has opened up the possibility of combining the high tempo… Show more

“…It enables individuals to effectively manage both external and internal stressors [ 41 ]. These cognitive abilities play a crucial role in both healthy and unhealthy behavior and are closely linked to the functions of the prefrontal lobes [ 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ]. Strong interpersonal abilities positively influence the mental, emotional, and physical health of athletes in both direct and indirect ways.…”

“…Historically, neurofeedback techniques have evolved from rudimentary methods to sophisticated protocols utilizing advanced technologies such as electroencephalography (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) (Kaur et al 2019e, Walker and J. E. 2009d, Ciccarelli et al 2023). Early studies laid the groundwork for understanding the mechanisms underlying neurofeedback and its potential therapeutic bene ts (Thibault et al 2016d).…”
