Simultaneous quantitative and qualitative analysis of bioactive phenols in Dendrobium aurantiacum var. denneanum by high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and diode array detection

Abstract: A novel high-performance liquid chromatographic method with mass spectrometry and diode array detection method for the simultaneous qualitative and quantitative analysis of bioactive phenols was developed. In total, nine chemically diverse phenols including five bibenzyls, three phenanthrenes and a coumarin were unambiguously identified in Dendrobium aurantiacum var. denneanum by comparison with the available references or reported data according to their retention behaviors, UV spectra and fragmentations of E… Show more

“…denneanum . Its structure was determined using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 13C-NMR spectral analyses, and its purity was >98%, as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis as described (20). Moscatilin was dissolved in absolute dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and was further diluted with culture medium on the experimental day.…”

“…Twelve compounds, including bibenzyls, phenanthrenes, benzoquinones, coumarins, cinnamic acid derivatives, b-sitosterol, and daucosterol, were previously isolated from the stems of D. denneanum (Yang et al, 2006b(Yang et al, , 2007bLiu et al, 2009). Due to the successful cultivation of D. denneanum in recent years, this plant has been a substitute for the other endangered Dendrobium species in clinical use.…”

“…Thus, the quality control of Shihu always is to focus on coumarins, alkaloids and bibenzyls [6][7][8][9]. However, these methods suffered from low resolution, low sensitivity [6,7] and long analytical time, as well as more mobile phase consumption [8,9]. Actually, there was no report for simultaneous determination of these three kinds of compounds in Dendrobium spp.…”

“…Coumarins, alkaloids and bibenzyls, which possess many pharmacological activities such as antitumor [2,3], antimutagenesis [4] and antiasthma [5] actions, are usually considered as the important active compounds in Dendrobium. Thus, the quality control of Shihu always is to focus on coumarins, alkaloids and bibenzyls [6][7][8][9]. However, these methods suffered from low resolution, low sensitivity [6,7] and long analytical time, as well as more mobile phase consumption [8,9].…”
