The influence of different treatments (in H 2 or in O 2 at 250 or 600°C) of alumina supported Ru catalysts on the total oxidation of propane was investigated. Ruthenium catalysts were prepared using RuCl 3 as metal precursor and characterized by H 2 chemisorption, O 2 uptake, BET, XRD and TEM. The presence of chloride on the catalyst surface was found to exert an inhibiting effect on the activity of Ru. The reduced Ru/c-Al 2 O 3 catalysts after partial removing chlorine ions were more active than the same samples oxidized at 250°C. The higher activity of the reduced Ru/c-Al 2 O 3 catalysts was attributed to the presence of a large amount of active sites on small Ru x O y clusters without well defined stoichiometry or on a poorly ordered layer of a ruthenium oxide on the larger Ru particles. The formation of highly dispersed, but in some extent crystallized RuO 2 phase in catalysts oxidized at 250°C, leads to slightly lower activity of the Ru phase. Strong decline of the activity was found for catalysts oxidized at 600°C. At this temperature, the Ru particles were completely oxidized to well-crystallized RuO 2 oxide, and the mean crystallite size of the Ru oxide phase was much higher (9-25 nm) than that of after oxidation at 250°C (*4 nm). The effect of the regeneration treatment in H 2 on the activity of the Ru/cAl 2 O 3 catalysts was also studied. The active ruthenium species for propane oxidation were discussed based on the catalytic and characterization data both before and after activity tests.

Two Ru/CeO 2 catalysts with Ru loadings of 1.65 and 5 wt% were prepared by wet impregnation. The adsorption of propylene or toluene led to two different ESR signals corresponding to two different catalytic sites. These two sites are present among the well dispersed ruthenium oxide species that reduce at *74°C. One site is un-reactive unless activated to remove adsorbed water while the second site is reactive at room temperature. Both sites are easily regenerated under oxidative atmosphere at 200°C. These two sites are optimally obtained for calcination temperatures in the 500-600°C interval and a Ru loading of 1.65 wt%. For Ru5Ce, the same reactive sites are present along with agglomerated ruthenium oxide species that are less reactive in oxidation reactions. Graphical Abstract2500 2750 3000 3250 3500 3750 4000 S 3

The performance of nickel, ruthenium, and nickel‐ruthenium impregnated on cerium oxide catalysts was tested in the methanation of carbon dioxide reaction. The nickel and ruthenium contents were 4 and 0.4 wt%, respectively. The properties of the catalysts were studied using elementary analysis, Brunauer‐Emmet‐Teller specific surface area measurements, X‐ray diffraction, temperature programmed reduction, temperature programmed desorption, H2 chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the addition of ruthenium improves the catalytic performance by promoting the dispersion of nickel species over the surface of the cerium oxide support. The ruthenium‐nickel combination produced a stable catalyst that did not show any deactivation even after 75 hours on‐stream. At high feed gas total pressures (5 and 10 bar), the catalytic conversions of CO2 were close to the thermodynamic equilibrium values with a 100 % selectivity towards CH4 formation.
