Simultaneous Optimization of Virtual Synchronous Generators Parameters and Virtual Impedances in Islanded Microgrids

Abstract: An islanded microgrid (MG) including low-inertia converter-based distributed generations (DGs) is subjected to instability. The virtual inertia concept was proposed to alleviate the stability issues by imitating the synchronous generators behavior. This paper spotlights on the optimization of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) parameters and virtual impedances (VI) in islanded MGs using particle swarm optimization (PSO). A smallsignal model for MG is developed at first. The permissible ranges of virtual inert… Show more

“…The existing studies have primarily focused on coordinating dispatchable DERs such as micro turbines, batteries, and fuel cells, while overlooking the role of non-dispatchable DERs, particularly photovoltaic (PV) systems, in MGs [24]. PV systems can utilise the inverter free capacity to generate reactive power.…”

“…Regarding the grid‐connected stability of VSG, most of the existing studies focus on the analysis of the stability of small‐signal disturbances 13–16 . There are relatively few studies oriented to the transient stability of VSG under large signal disturbances.…”

“…Regarding the grid-connected stability of VSG, most of the existing studies focus on the analysis of the stability of small-signal disturbances. [13][14][15][16] There are relatively few studies oriented to the transient stability of VSG under large signal disturbances. Liu et al 17 proposed a fault current limiting method based on quantitative design of virtual impedance to so lve the transient instability of VSG caused by grid faults, which can realize the low voltage ride-through of VSG.…”

“…Using power reference commands as input, a VSG operates similar to a synchronous generator. So, the robustness of the power system is improved [16][17][18][19].…”

“…In [58], to determine appropriate virtual inertia values for VSGs and to reduce the real power output and frequency oscillations of the DG during load fluctuation, an approach for virtual inertia estimation is provided. In [19], a cost function based on frequency deviation and frequency change rate is used to increase the inertia in microgrids.…”
