Simultaneous Monitoring of Ammonia and Moisture Using a Single Fiber Optoelectrode as a Transducer

Abstract: The lack of selectivity is one of the problems of chemical sensor technologies in real world applications. In an effort to develop chemical sensors of improved selectivity, we integrated electrochemistry and optical spectroscopy into one single transducer. An electrically conductive polyaniline (PANi) membrane has been coated on the end of an optical fiber to form a fiber optoelectrode. Two electrodes were glued on the side of the optical fiber for measuring the membrane's electrical resistance. At the same ti… Show more

“…These materials can be fabricated into fiber‐shaped chemical sensors for the detection of toxic vapors, including nitric oxide and ammonia. These fibers include porous carbon fibers with TiO 2 and CNTs additives, pitch‐based carbon fibers, polyaniline‐coated optical fibers, and CNT‐coated poly(ethylene imine)/cotton yarn . Their performances are presented in Table .…”

“…Due to the versatility of the dry spinning technique, various fiber supercapacitors with intriguing functionalities, such as electrochromic, self‐healing, energy converting, and sensing capabilities, have been developed by integrating the functional nanomaterials into fiber electrodes. Peng and co‐workers prepared an electrochromic composite fiber by depositing a PANI layer (70 wt%) and woven it into fabrics ( Figure a).…”

“…With time, the evolution of the sensing technologies lead to more precise, accurate, and durable transducers. [20][21][22][23][24] Metal oxide (MOS), electrochemical, and catalytic transducers measure their target gases through chemical reactions, on an irreversible process. All three types of measurement function on a similar manner, although they have particular characteristics on the measurement process.…”
