Simultaneous Measurement of Thickness and Elastic Properties of Thin Plastic Films by Means of Ultrasonic Guided Waves

Abstract: Ultrasonic guided waves are already used for material characterization. The advantage of these waves is that they propagate in the plane of a plate and their propagation characteristics are sensitive to properties of the material. The objective of this research was to develop an ultrasonic method that could be used to measure the properties of thin plastic polyvinylchloride films (PVC). The proposed method exploits two fundamental Lamb wave modes, A0 and S0, for measurement of a thin film thickness and Young’s… Show more

“…There are some tasks in which applications of a few different guided waves enable us to obtain more information about structures under a test. For example, the measurement of phase velocities of symmetrical S 0 and antisymmetrical A 0 guided wave modes allowed us to determine the thickness and Young's modulus of thin PVC films [21]. The main problem is how to excite such modes in thin films especially using air-coupled methods.…”

“…However, exploitation of the symmetric S 0 mode enables not only detection of various defects, but also evaluation of elastic properties of the item under a test [20]. For example, simultaneously excited S 0 and A 0 guided wave modes enabled the measurement of thickness and Young's modulus of thin PVC films [21]. For practical applications, it would be very attractive to use it for the same ultrasonic air-coupled transducer or array.…”

“…However, more direct measurement methods are often required for high-precision or high-load systems [ 13 ]. Many film-thickness measurement methods are available, such as electrical methods [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], optical methods [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ], and ultrasonic methods [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Among them, the eddy-current method [ 24 , 25 ] is one of the most applied methods in industrial settings given its good working reliability, high sensitivity, and strong anti-interference ability.…”
