Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Relative Humidity Using a Dual-Wavelength Erbium-Doped Fiber Ring Laser Sensor

Abstract: A fiber ring laser sensor setup utilizing FBGs (Fiber Bragg Gratings) for simultaneous measurement of ambient temperature and relative humidity (RH) is presented. Two FBGs are incorporated as tunable filters for a dual-wavelength laser emission, where one FBG was coated with Polyimide (PI) in order to achieve sensitivity to RH changes, while the other bare FBG was used for temperature sensing. An increase in RH would induce a strain on the grating, which results in a variation in the resonance wavelength of th… Show more

“…It is important to note that the PMF responds simultaneously to temperature and refractive index after being tapered. As a result, there is a cross-sensitivity phenomenon that can be resolved by establishing a dual parameter matrix for dual-wavelength lasers by cascading FBG with our created structure [35]. Here, we concentrate on creating extremely high SNR and narrow bandwidth laser sensing devices.…”

“…However, the designed structure requires photoelectric detectors and oscilloscopes to perform photoelectric conversion, which reduces the system efficiency. Mateusz et al realized the simultaneous measurement of humidity and temperature by using a cascaded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) [ 32 ]. However, due to the inherent properties of the FBG, the detection sensitivity obtained is particularly low.…”

“…In order to overcome these shortcomings and obtain good sensing performance, fiber ring laser has been widely studied in recent years. Various types of Interferometer Fiber structures are embedded in the FRL to form a sensing system to measure biomolecules [14], magnetic field [15], electric field [16], stress [17], curvature [8], and environmental humidity [18]. In the sensing system, the interferometer plays a role of filtering, and its passband is affected by the exotic environment.…”
