The biogeochemical cycles of elements from soils to plants are mainly governed by their rhizosphere processes. Understanding these processes is challenging and remains largely unresolved due to the complex interrelationships among different elements and due to a lack of appropriate techniques for simultaneous spatiotemporal monitoring. MethodsThis study employed an In-situ Porewater Iterative (IPI) sampler array (0-22 mm measurement distance every 1.7 mm, with a time interval of 3 to 10 days) to capture the in situ spatiotemporal dynamics of ten elements (Fe, Mn, As, P, S, Cr, Co, Zn, Sb and Cd) in the paddy rhizosphere to examine their covarying changes in time and space dimensions. ResultsThe ndings revealed that the solute-phase concentration of most elements, other than Sb and Cd, increased to a peak after 30 days of paddy soil ooding and then decreased. Additionally, Sb and Cd continuously decreased during ooding. Fe (-52%), Mn (-17%), P (-43%), Co (-11%), and As species (-74%) were substantially immobilized within a 10 mm zone around the roots, while Zn (28%) and Cd (41%) increased. The greater immobilization of As and re-mobilization of Cd, in the rhizosphere, are stimulated by biotic oxidation of arsenite to arsenate with root oxygen loss and the pH decrease, respectively. ConclusionsOur study showed most sampled elements covaried with Fe both in time and space in the rhizosphere, but the elements are temporally and spatially determined by multiple biogeochemical processes in soils as well as exudates from plant roots.

The sharp redox gradient at soil-water interfaces (SWI) plays a key role in controlling arsenic (As) translocation and transformation in paddy soils. When Eh drops, As is released to porewater from solid iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) minerals and reduced to arsenite. However, the coupling or decoupling processes operating within the redox gradient at the SWI in flooded paddy soils remain poorly constrained due to the lack of direct evidence. In this paper, we reported the mm-scale mapping of Fe, As and other associated elements across the redox gradient in the SWI of five different paddy soils. The results showed a strong positive linear relationship between dissolved Fe, Mn, As, and phosphorus (P) in 4 out of the 5 paddy soils, indicating the general coupling of these elements. However, decoupling of Fe, Mn and As was observed in one of the paddy soils. In this soil, distinct releasing profiles of Mn, As and Fe were observed, and the releasing order followed the redox ladder. Further investigation of As species showed the ratio of arsenite to total As dropped from 100% to 75.5% and then kept stable along depth of the soil profile, which indicates a dynamic equilibrium between arsenite oxidization and arsenate reduction. This study provides direct evidence of multi-elements' interaction along redox gradient of SWI in paddy soils.

Reduce methane emission from rice paddies by man-made aerenchymatous tissues

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, and 8–11% is emitted from paddy fields. Methanogenic microbial processes in water-saturated soils can be alleviated through the oxygenation of soils, which may hamper methane production and emissions in paddies. Here, by mimicking O2 release from rice roots, we report the use of man-made (i.e., silicone tube-based) aerenchymatous tissues (MAT) to continuously release O2 to abate methane emission from paddies. High O2-releasing rates (such as 5 kg O2/ha/d) can be easily achieved by adjusting MAT density (e.g., 0.2 m2 tube/m2 soil) and its inner air pressure (e.g., 25 kPa). Following deployment, MAT significantly increased soil redox potential (from -150 mV to -88.6 mV) and induced active iron redox cycling. This decreased the availability of organic substrates of methanogens and therefore dramatically reduced their abundance (-25.1% active mcrA gene). We quantified the decrease in methane emission both in mesocosms and paddy field trials and found in both setups that ~ 50% of methane emission was reduced. Moreover, we showed that the performance of MAT can be further improved by simply increasing the air pressure in MAT (e.g., -74.2% methane emission at 200 kPa air pressure). This work provides a powerful and sustainable method for mitigating methane emission from rice paddies. Graphical Abstract
