Simultaneous Growths of Gold Colloidal Crystals

Abstract: Natural systems give the route to design periodic arrangements with mesoscopic architecture using individual nanocrystals as building blocks forming colloidal crystals or supracrystals. The collective properties of such supracrystals are one of the main driving forces in materials research for the 21st century with potential applications in electronics or biomedical environments. Here we describe two simultaneous supracrystal growth processes from gold nanocrystal suspension, taking place in solution and at th… Show more

“…At the air-toluene interface, however, a lm was observed. As described earlier by Pileni and coworkers 55 this interfacial lm is formed via a layer-by-layer growth mechanism (heterogeneous growth). Here, the particles stack perpendicular to the interface with the (111)-planes of the supercrystal oriented parallel to the interface.…”

“…Yao et al reported a δ value 0.2 nm smaller in the 3D Au shaped supracrystals than the monolayer superlattice mediated by hydrogen bond 35 . For 5-8 nm Au nanocrystals coated with dodecanethiol, the simultaneously grown film and shape supracrystals show a δ difference (δ shape -δ film ) between -0.2 to 0.5 nm 36,37 . Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Shevchenko et al have shown that the interparticle distance of 7.0 nm PbS (stabilized with oleic acid) shape supracrystal formed by non-solvent diffusion method is 0.5 nm shorter than that of film superlattice by solvent evaporation method 7,38 .…”

“…S1 †). 52,53 The resulting superlattices exhibit orientational ordering which implies an atomic alignment between the single-domain NPs. This crystallographic register explains the stronger interactions between single-domain NPs compared to the polycrystalline ones, induced by nanocrystal facet-to-facet geometry.…”
