COMMUNICATIONSTable 2. The effect of drum rotational speed on material carryover and process efficiency (solids application rate 7.30 g min-1, charge 10 kg). Drum rotation speed rev min-1 12 15 20 24 Material carryover % 1.81 1.85 2-13 2.21 Processefficiency % 98.2 98.1 97.9 97.8These results have important practical implications in the film coating of solid dosage forms and are particularly relevant to sustained release products where the drug release rate is dependent on, inter alia, the thickness and the uniformity of the film coating. In this case increasing the drum rotational speed may well be detrimental since, although improving mixing of the tablet bed, it may well result in increased carryover and decreased film thickness. The results illustrate the potential of this accurate, rapid and simple technique of isokinetic sampling of the exhaust duct in the optimization of process conditions during product development.
