The present study was conducted to evaluate two S. aureus vaccines in 100 mastitis free lactating buffaloes, dividing into 2 equal groups (B1, B2). The animals of B1 and B2 were administered with 2 shots of live attenuated and Dextran sulphate adjuvanted S. aureus vaccine at 15 days sequentially. The evaluation was done with different parameters i.e., serum and whey antibody titers, somatic cell count, milk fat %, milk protein, milk yield, vaccine efficacy, cost-benefit analysis, and colony count. There was a peak of geometric mean antibody titer 291 and 58 in LSAV while its climax 363 and 90 in DSAV at 2 and 6 months of study. In whey this level almost remained the same in both groups. In B1 and B2, somatic cell count kept on decreasing from day zero to the end of study. There was a non-significant difference in milk yield and fat percentage between the 2 groups. Milk protein concentration was significantly different between these groups and was better in B1 than B2. The surf field mastitis test-based quarter point prevalence decreased at 180 days in LASV and DSAV. In California mastitis test based, a significant decreased value was shown in both groups. Pre-vaccination and post-vaccination colony count of S. aureus was more in LSAV than in DSAV. Moreover, the preventative efficacy and cost benefit ratio of DSAV was more excellent as compared to LSAV.

Infectious diseases are a major threat to the sustainable production of high-producing animals. Control efforts, such as vaccination or breeding approaches often target improvements to individual resilience to infections, i.e., they strengthen an animal’s ability to cope with infection, rather than preventing infection per se . There is increasing evidence for the contribution of non-clinical carriers (animals that become infected and are infectious but do not develop clinical signs) to the overall health and production of livestock populations for a wide range of infectious diseases. Therefore, we strongly advocate a shift of focus from increasing the disease resilience of individual animals to herd disease resilience as the appropriate target for sustainable disease control in livestock. Herd disease resilience not only captures the direct effects of vaccination or host genetics on the health and production performance of individuals but also the indirect effects on the environmental pathogen load that herd members are exposed to. For diseases primarily caused by infectious pathogens shed by herd members, these indirect effects on herd resilience are mediated both by individual susceptibility to infection and by characteristics (magnitude of infectiousness, duration of infectious period) that influence pathogen shedding from infected individuals. We review what is currently known about how vaccination and selective breeding affect herd disease resilience and its underlying components, and outline the changes required for improvement. To this purpose, we also seek to clarify and harmonise the terminology used in the different animal science disciplines to facilitate future collaborative approaches to infectious disease control in livestock.

Mastitis is the most widespread and economically important disease of dairy sector worldwide. The present research was, therefore intended to establish the prevalence of mastitis in and around the Multan district. A total of 100 dairy cows were randomly sampled during the period from July 2018 to October 2018 from different local dairy farms at Multan. After screening with California Mastitis Test, milk samples from mastitic animals were cultured and subjected to microbiological examination.The overall prevalence of subclinical mastitis in cows was 38% and quarter-wise prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 36.20%.. Mastitis in front left quarters was 34.40%, right front quarters 31.60%, while left rare quarters 41% and right rear quarters 38%. Bacteria Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Enterococci, Salmonella, Bacillus, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas were isolated from infected samples. Staphylococcus aureus was the top-ranking isolated bacteria followed by Strept. Agalactiae and E. coli. The lack of proper milking techniques and no teat dipping were the most significantly associated risk factors. In the current study, E. coli isolates were sensitive to Gentamycine, Streptomycin, Chlororamphenicol and Kanamycin while resistant to Vancomycin and Penicillin. Similarly, S. aureus was extremely susceptible to Chloramphenicol, Vancomycin and Kanamycin but resistant to Tetracycline and Penicillin. It was concluded that subclinical mastitis was widely prevalent in Multan city. This study will help the farmers to adopt effective measures to control mastitis regarding the risk factors.
