Simultaneous Episodes of Heavy Rainfall in Morocco and Southern Alps: 1. Mesoscale Simulations and Episode Climatology (1979–2016)

Abstract: The torrential rain and southerly föhn episode on 14–16 November 2002 in the Alpine southside, which affected the Piedmont region, was concurrent with heavy rains in the northwest flanks of the Middle and High Atlas in Morocco. Both simultaneous rainfalls are analyzed, as well as the recent climatology of similar episodes. A mesoscale modelling system is used first to simulate the relevant atmospheric processes and then to map the evaporative sources of both targets. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiomet… Show more

“…On the other hand, this type of Alpine extreme rainfall episodes, which develops after the formation of an elongated upper level trough, used to be concurrent with severe rainfalls and floods in the west facing slopes of the Middle and High Atlas, including the Er‐Rif (ER) mountains in Morocco. A detailed analysis of this type of simultaneous episodes and their recurrence is treated in Gangoiti et al (), referred to as G19. In Morocco, the referred rainfall episode lasted for a shorter time (14–15 November 2002) and the evaluation of its sources will help us to elucidate whether they share the same moisture sources than the Alpine rainfalls.…”
