Simultaneous EEG-fMRI for Functional Neurological Assessment

Abstract: The increasing incidence of neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases requires increasingly sophisticated tools for their diagnosis and monitoring. Clinical assessment takes advantage of objective parameters extracted by electroencephalogram and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) among others, to support clinical management of neurological diseases. The complementarity of these two tools can be now emphasized by the possibility of integrating the two technologies in a hybrid solution, allowing simultaneous acqu… Show more

“…The electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded in 15 min sessions during which the patient was in a psychosensory resting state and alternated between closed and open eyes [ 34 ]. A 32-channel brain cap MR with multitrodes was used (Brain Products GmbH, Gilching, Germany).…”

“…More recently, the origin of signal used by functional MRI to investigate large-group of neuronal activations has been debated, considering preclinical evidences that evoked astrocytic Ca 2+ waves can correlate with increased EEG power signal , astrocyte-evoked BOLD fluctuations (Takata et al, 2018), and transcranial direct current stimulation response (Monai and Hirase, 2018). These findings render furtherly more appealing the use of hybrid scanner that can acquire simultaneously PET, fMRI, and EEG signal (Mele et al, 2019).…”

“…It was first developed in the 1990s for the use in the epilepsy field 1 , 2 and has subsequently been used in neuroscience research since the 2000s 3 , 4 . With the increase in knowledge regarding the safety 5 and continuous development of techniques for the removal of MRI-induced artifacts on EEG 3 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , it is currently a tool that is widely utilized in both neuroscience and clinical research 11 .…”

“…EEG-fMRI is acquired either at rest or during a task, depending on the research question. In general, resting state acquisition allows the identification of structures involved in the generation of a particular EEG feature (e.g., waveform, rhythm, frequencies, power) and helps in understanding the variable spontaneous brain activities 11 . A number of neuroscience studies and most clinical studies, especially those on epilepsy 12 , acquire EEG-fMRI at rest 11 .…”
