Simultaneous Determination of Trace Wear Metals in Used Lubricating Oils by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry Using a Silicon-Target Vidicon Detector

Abstract: A multichannel atomic absorption spectrometer with a silicon-target vidicon detector was used for the simultaneous determination of trace metals in aqueous solution and in used lubricating oils. In most cases sensitivities were similar to those obtained by conventional single channel atomic absorption. Iron, magnesium, copper, and silver were simultaneously determined in lubricating oils, and, although precision was somewhat poorer than that normally attained by atomic absorption, it was adequate for this appl… Show more

“…Both atomic absorption and fluorescence measurements have benefited from the utilization of phase sensitive detection systems. Silicon vidicons, in their present development state, are not adaptable to modulated signal methods (33). Thus, a direct comparison with best absorption and fluorescence literature data would not be equitable.…”

“…A primary encumbrance to multielement AA has been the alignment of several sources such that the radiation from all of the sources is combined into a single beam to pass through the same portion of the flame. Gratings (1), fiber optics (2), beam splitters (3)(4)(5), and mirror arrangements (6) have been used for this purpose. Gratings and mirror arrangements require careful alignment and are not convenient for a rapid change of analytes.…”

“…Multielement hollow cathode (HC) lamps can be used for certain combinations of elements (3,4,7,8). The significant difference in the intensity of resonance lines for different elements causes dynamic range problems when they are used with detectors with a limited dynamic range (e.g., multichannel semiconductor detectors) (8).…”

“…TV-type image detectors are becoming popular in multielement applications (36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41), and the two-dimensional nature of these systems lends itself to adaptation with the échelle grating.
