Simultaneous determination of trace rare-earth elements in simulated water samples using ICP-OES with TODGA extraction/back-extraction

Abstract: The determination of trace rare-earth elements (REEs) can be used for the assessment of environmental pollution, and is of great significance to the study of toxicity and toxicology in animals and plants. N, N, N′, N′-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) is an environmental friendly extractant that is highly selective to REEs. In this study, an analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 trace REEs in simulated water samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (… Show more

“…Some derivatives based on the DGA chemical structure have been synthesized and used industrially for adsorbing REEs and exhibited excellent enrichment and selectivity. 26,27 Unfortunately, no previous work has been published in which magnetic nanoparticles modified with a diglycolamide ligand were used for the adsorption of REEs. There have been reports on the synthesis of magnetic nanomaterials modified with diglycolamide ligands, including diglycolamic acid-functionalized chitosan-coated Fe 3 O 4 (Fe@CS-DGA), 28 TODGA-coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @TODGA), 29 and DGA-methacrylate-coated Fe 3 O 4 particles (Fe 3 O 4 @MC-DGA).…”

“…Jinhong Yang et al studied the extraction of Sm and Nd in the hydrochloric acid system with TBDGA (N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide) [9]. Fukai Li et al [10] used TODGA as an extractant to provide a feasible method for simultaneous determination of trace rare earth elements in water samples. Marino Gergoric et al [11] studied the selectivity of rare earth in its leaching solution by using nitric acid to dissolve NdFeB magnetic waste.…”

“…Only quite abundant deposits can be called reserve of rare earth, but that amount cannot be reliable practically and economically. Generally ICP-MS technique is the best for determination of trace contents of REEs in the rock sample due to its good sensitivity and selectivity (Li et al, 2017, Longerich et al, 1990. As shown from results the D.L for most REEs by this technique is between (0.01-0.3ppm), the correlation coefficient R-squire ZANCO Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences 2020 (0.999-0.9999) after calibrations, aqueous quality control solutions are analysed at regular intervals throughout the run to achieve best sensitivity for results.…”

“…For determination of REEs in real samples, several analytical methodologies have been applied such as; (INAA) Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (Aliyu et al, 2018), (XRF) X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry (Schramm, 2016, Silva et al, 2020, (ICP-AES) Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (Zybinsky et al, 2019), (ICP-OES) Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (Li et al, 2019), and (ICP-MS) Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (Druzian et al, 2016, Gorbatenko and Revina, 2015, Zawisza et al, 2011. The most commonly used technique to analyse trace elements in geological samples is an(ICP-MS) a technique that incorporate multielement capability, speed and high sensitivity (Li et al, 2017, Longerich et al, 1990. Even modern analytical technique as (ICP-MS) require pre concentration step, especially for elements like (Lu).…”
