“…Nevertheless, the sum of the concentrations of the two isomers was significantly lower in diabetic pa- tients, owing to the good correlation between the two isomers. It is interesting that the lower serum RAs status in T2DM patients contrasts with the report of greater serum retinol level in NIDDM patients, [6][7][8] though the possibility that the lower RAs level just reflects the higher mean of age of the diabetic group cannot be excluded.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] In contrast, patients with non insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) have greater serum retinol concentrations than normal subjects. [6][7][8] Recently, PPARg, a ligand-activated transcription factor and a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, was found to play a pivotal role in the expression of genes associated with metabolism and transport of glucose and lipids.9) Ligand-induced activation of PPARg/RXR heterodimer leads to differentiation of adipocytes in vitro and in vivo, and increases the insulin sensitivity of diabetic animals and human patients. Therefore, the possibility that 9-cisretinoic acid (9cRA), an endogenous ligand of RXR and one of the metabolites of retinol, might be affected in diabetes mellitus patients and be a factor in the pathological aspects of diabetic mellitus, should be considered.…”

“…Several HPLC methods for the analysis of retinol (R), retinyl palmitate (RP) and β-carotene (β-C) levels in tissues and blood serum are described, including UV/DAD [23,25,[27][28][29][30], fluorescence detection [31][32][33][34] and electrochemical detection [35][36][37][38]. Carotenoids and retinoids can be monitored by UV/ DAD detectors, retinoids by fluorescence detection, and carotenoids by electrochemical detection.…”
