Simultaneous Determination of Dopamine, Serotonin and Ascorbic Acid at a Glassy Carbon Electrode Modified with Carbon-Spheres

Abstract: A novel glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with carbon-spheres has been fabricated through a simple casting procedure. The modified GCE displays high selectivity and excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and ascorbic acid (AA). In the co-existence system, the peak separations between AA and DA, DA and 5-HT, and AA and 5-HT are large up to 230, 180, and 410 mV, respectively. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) has been employed to simultaneously detect DA, … Show more

“…This because it is not only the most common anti‐oxidant, but is also present in mammalian brain along with several neurotransmitters, so its determination is also crucial in the medical field. Electrochemical methods for its determination were recently reviewed , nevertheless many others were proposed since then . Many of these methods allow the determination of ascorbic acid in the presence of several other analytes, more commonly uric acid and dopamine since they are co‐existing in biological matrixes and they are oxidized at almost the same potential at traditional electrode materials.…”

Other methods were demonstrated successfully for mixture of ascorbic acid with some drugs , especially acetaminophen or components regulating the physiological function of organisms .…”

“…play a vital function in evaluating the activity of the central nervous systems, explaining the disease mechanism and supporting the diagnosis of many diseases (Westerink and Timmerman, 1999;Hussain and Lokhandwala, 2003). 5-HT makes a significant contribution to brain functions such as sleep, thermoregulation and food intake, as well as psychopathological states such as depression and anxiety (Zhou et al, 2013). For example, the deficiency of DA concentration in brain may lead to Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia (Kienast and Heinz, 2006;Tsunoda et al, 2010).…”

“…For example, the deficiency of DA concentration in brain may lead to Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia (Kienast and Heinz, 2006;Tsunoda et al, 2010). 5-HT makes a significant contribution to brain functions such as sleep, thermoregulation and food intake, as well as psychopathological states such as depression and anxiety (Zhou et al, 2013). Hence, it is important to develop a simple, rapid and sensitive method to determine monoamine neurotransmitters owing to their important roles in clinical diagnosis and medical treatment.…”
