La inflamación del sistema nervioso central secundaria a la infección por la familia herpesviridae puede generar un compromiso difuso del parénquima encefálico, la cual puede ser fatal en ausencia de un rápido diagnóstico y tratamiento. Objetivo: revisar las diferentes características biológicas, fisiopatológicas, clínicas, terapéuticas y pronóstico de la meningoencefalitis causada por VHS-1 y 2. Materiales y métodos: revisión de la literatura científica (revisión crítica), llevada a cabo mediante las bases de datos Medline y buscadores específicos IMBIOMED, PUBMEDE, SCIENCEDIRECT, SCIELO, con un total de 150 artículos, se priorizaron 67 los cuales fueron leídos a profundidad. Resultados y discusión: debido el neurotropismo del herpes virus simple puede causar neuroinvasividad, neurotoxicidad y latencia en el SNC. Por sus características semiológicas inespecíficas se requiere un estudio exhaustivo para lograr el diagnóstico acertado. Los métodos actuales tales como neuroimágenes y PCR han aportado al esclarecimiento del diagnóstico etiológico de esta patología. La detección temprana de la entidad y la instauración precoz del tratamiento, se asocian con un aumento en la tasa de supervivencia y a una disminución de las secuelas neurológicas. Conclusión: conocer la biología del virus, su comportamiento, las características clínicas y el tratamiento de la entidad es una estrategia eficaz para disminuir secuelas y desenlaces fatales.

Latar belakang. Hidrosefalus merupakan salah satu kelainan kongenital tersering pada anak yang dapat menyebabkan penurunan kualitas hidup anak. Penyebab hidrosefalus masih belum banyak diketahui dan faktor risikonya belum banyak dipelajari. Tujuan. Mengevaluasi dan mengidentifikasi faktor risiko yang berhubungan dengan terjadinya hidrosefalus komunikans dan non komunikans pada anak. Metode. Penelitian analitik observasional pada 80 pasien anak yang menderita hidrosefalus dengan menggunakan data sekunder di pusat rekam medis RSUD dr. Soetomo. Analisis menggunakan chi-square dan regresi logistik. Hasil. Prevalensi hidrosefalus komunikans dan non komunikans adalah 41,25% dan 58,75%. Hasil analisis menunjukkan meningoensefalitis memiliki hubungan dengan hidrosefalus komunikans (p=0,023). Data statistik menunjukkan bahwa manifestasi klinis terbanyak pada hidrosefalus adalah edema otak. Background. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common congenital disease in children leading to decrease quality of life. The cause of hydrocephalus is still poorly understood and its risk factors have not been much studied.Objective. To evaluate and identify the risk factors associated with pediatric communicating and non communicating hydrocephalus.Method. An analitic observational study, that was conducted in 80 pediatric patient who suffer hydrocephalus using secondary data at center of medical records in RSUD dr. Soetomo. Analysis using Chi-squre and binary logistic regression. Result. Prevalence of communicating hydrocephalus is 41,25% and prevalence of non-communicating hydrocephalus is 58,75%. The result showed that meningoencephalitis has correlation to communicating hydrocephalus(sig=0.023). Statistic data showed the most clinical manifestation of hydrocephalus is brain edema. Conclusion.Meningoencephalitis is a risk factor of communicating hydrocephalus.

Central nervous system (CNS) infection is a serious illness that can lead to death. CNS infections include meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscesses and myelitis. These diseases are caused by causative agents like bacteria, fungi, parasites, and protozoa, but most commonly by viral infections. To combat this issue, accurate diagnosis of etiological agents at an early stage is crucial for appropriate treatment, control of the disease and prevent from becoming life-threatening to the patients. This review paper summarises the main laboratory diagnostic methods for CNS infections caused by viruses ranging from conventional to molecular methods. Conventional isolation methods are considered the ‘gold standard’ as they provide accurate evidence, but require highly skilled personnel, are time-consuming, critical in cell type selection and are useless for non-cultivable viruses. Electron microscopy allows recognition of viral morphology and ultrastructural details as the principle of virus identification through negative staining or thin section technique (suitable for tissue or cell specimens). However, it offers low sensitivity and requires at least 106 virions per millilitre or milligram in the specimen to be detectable by microscopy. Immunological-based methods have been extensively applied for viral diagnosis by detecting the antiviral antibodies or viral antigens in clinical samples. While these methods provided high sensitivity and specificity, the incubation and window period of an infection may give false-negative results. Lastly, molecular detections have many advantages such as high sensitivity, specificity, rapid, require a small amount of sample, simultaneous detection of multiple different viruses, and produce both qualitative and quantitative results.
