How Transparent Oxides Gain Some Color: Discovery of a CeNiO₃ Reduced Bandgap Phase As an Absorber for Photovoltaics

In this work, we describe the formation of a reduced bandgap CeNiO phase, which, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported, and we show how it is utilized as an absorber layer in a photovoltaic cell. The CeNiO phase is prepared by a combinatorial materials science approach, where a library containing a continuous compositional spread of Ce NiO is formed by pulsed laser deposition (PLD); a method that has not been used in the past to form Ce-Ni-O materials. The library displays a reduced bandgap throughout, calculated to be 1.48-1.77 eV, compared to the starting materials, CeO and NiO, which each have a bandgap of ∼3.3 eV. The materials library is further analyzed by X-ray diffraction to determine a new crystalline phase. By searching and comparing to the Materials Project database, the reduced bandgap CeNiO phase is realized. The CeNiO reduced bandgap phase is implemented as the absorber layer in a solar cell and photovoltages up to 550 mV are achieved. The solar cells are also measured by surface photovoltage spectroscopy, which shows that the source of the photovoltaic activity is the reduced bandgap CeNiO phase, making it a viable material for solar energy.

Selective Glucose Sensing under Physiological pH with Flexible and Binder‐Free Prussian Blue Coated Carbon Cloth Electrodes

The frequent detection of physiological glucose levels from human blood or sweat requires the development of low-cost electrodes with high sensitivity and selectivity. In this work, we prepared a series of Prussian blue (PB) modified carbon cloth (CC) electrodes with different cyanoferrate groups. We achieved a sensitivity as high as 145.43 μA mm À 1 cm À 2 in a 0.1-6.5 mm concentration range with a response time below 2 s under physiological pH. The electrodes exhibited a superior selectivity of glucose in the presence of interfering agents, including sucrose, lactose, NaCl, ascorbic acid, and uric acid. The electrodes also showed outstanding long-term stability over 15 days. Furthermore, we performed comprehensive electrochemical and characterization studies to elucidate the role of the cyanoferrate group on the morphologic and electronic properties of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Effects of ZrO 2 addition to the Au/CeO 2 and the pretreatment methods of the catalysts on the partial oxidation of methanol (POM) were investigated. ZrO 2 addition to Au/CeO 2 catalyst led to (i) formation of a Ce 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 solid solution; (ii) enhancement of lattice oxygen reducibility of the Ce 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 support; and (iii) formation of surface Au δ+ (δ = 1 or 3) species coexisting with Au 0 nanoparticles. Catalytic evaluation showed that the highest hydrogen selectivity was achieved over Au/Ce 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 at 270 °C. The reductive pretreatment could improve the hydrogen selectivity and methanol conversion as well. At higher reaction temperature Au δ+ clusters in Au/ Ce 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 catalyst activated the O-H bond in the adsorbed CH 3 -O δ− -H δ+ due to the interaction between Au δ+ and O δ− -H δ+ of methanol that favors the release of H + proton, and thus benefits the H 2 selectivity enhancement. Some oxygen vacancies in the catalysts evidenced by XPS analysis participated in the formation of active surface oxygen species that promoted CO oxidation to CO 2 on Au 0 nanoparticles A reaction mechanism of POM involving in the methanol surface adsorption on Au δ+ species, O-H bond activation, and CO oxidation on Au 0 nanoparticles and oxygen defects was proposed.
